MENA Newswire News Desk: The European Union (EU) has initiated a “Humanitarian Air Bridge” to support Lebanon, a country reeling from worsening economic conditions and widespread poverty due to prolonged political instability. The airlift will involve three flights from Dubai and Brindisi, Italy, with the first shipment scheduled to arrive in Beirut on October 11. These flights will carry critical EU-owned humanitarian supplies, including hygiene kits, blankets, and emergency shelter equipment.

Lebanon’s economic crisis has plunged much of the population into abject poverty, with the local currency losing over 90% of its value in recent years. Basic services such as healthcare and education have become inaccessible for large portions of the population, and fuel shortages continue to disrupt daily life. The country’s political paralysis has exacerbated the crisis, leaving little room for reforms or effective government response.

The EU has also been coordinating with several of its member states, utilizing the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Since last week, countries like Spain, Slovakia, Poland, France, and Belgium have delivered much-needed aid to Beirut, with Greece set to contribute further supplies in the coming days. This aid, funded by the European Commission, includes critical medical supplies and emergency healthcare items intended to assist displaced populations who have limited access to essential services.

The humanitarian situation in Lebanon has reached unprecedented levels, with inflation driving food and medicine prices beyond the reach of most citizens. The World Bank has referred to Lebanon’s economic collapse as one of the worst in recent history, with political deadlock and mismanagement contributing significantly.
